Acomplia is the first in a new class of drugs that target cardiometabolic risk factors such as abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, cholesterol and elevated triglycerides(i). The use of Acomplia as a treatment to aid weight loss received a letter of approval from the FDA but its use to aid smoking cessation was considered 'not approvable'. While if Acomplia is approved it can generally be prescribed by doctors for any purpose, without FDA approval Sanofi-Aventis will be unable to market Acomplia (Rimonabant/Zimulti) as a smoking-cessation drug in the United States. It remains to be seen what the FDA's atittude toward approving Acomplia for more than simple weight loss will be.
